What the city of Rotterdam can become?

Architect Enzo Valerio has designed an exhibition below Kruisplein

Rotterdam is known for the spectacular architecture. This is celebrated during Rotterdam Architecture Month. The event can be visited online and real life at various locations throughout the city. A perfect way for expats and international students to get to know the city.

Something’s bubbling under the surface!

The rental agents of Riva are always on the go in the city to arrange viewings in our rental apartments. That way they see all of the great buildings in Rotterdam, towering the sky. But from 2 june the festival heart of Rotterdam Architecture Month is in the parking garage under Kruisplein. A place not many people see regularly. Architect Enzo Valerio has designed an exciting intervention in the garage. Deep beneath the surface of Kruisplein near the Central Station and Central Plaza, a landscape of concrete rubble is forming from which an exhibition is being constructed that shows what the city of Rotterdam can become.

Valerio’s intervention ‘Undercurrent, behind the scenes of urban development’ gives the festival heart the face of a new generation of designers. From the immense landscape of concrete rubble, an exhibition, workshop spaces and studios are being built.

Enzo Valerio: “The construction site, which characterizes the city at a time of development, is the place where the city is built and modified. It is the laboratory where, behind the screens of building scaffolding and fences, people work every day on spaces that become part of our daily lives. That sounds very ordinary, but there is nothing more special than making a place where people are happy: a good piece of city. What the city was, is and will be – that is what I want to make visible within the exhibition design. An exhibition about the future of Rotterdam, built from the demolished building stock of that same city. An ode to the construction site and the change that characterizes this city.”

You can visit the exhibition for free and without an appointment. You can find the entrance at the pavilion opposite De Doelen and Ayla. The exhibition is open from Thursday to Sunday from 12 to 17 PM.

Joint initiative

The Rotterdam Architecture Month (RA Month) is a joint initiative by AIR, Rotterdam Festivals and Rotterdam Partners and takes place in June. It will be organised in collaboration with various initiators, the (Rotterdam) design sector and design education. The ambition for this edition has complementary components that will take place online, offline and in hybrid form.

Meeting and exchanging knowledge are essential to a vital architectural climate, but the current Corona times make strict demands on how we can safely organise this meeting. We therefore expect to offer part of the programme in an online or hybrid form. This way, RA Month can take place regardless of what Corona measures are in place.

Living in winners

The RA Month program includes a presentation of the Architecture Yearbook, Rotterdam Rooftop Days and the Rotterdam Architecture Prize 2021

Riva offers several apartments for rent in former winners like Fenix by MEI Architects, Timmerhuis by OMA and the Markthal by MVRDV.

Calypso was also nominated in the year the Market Hall won. Riva offers several flats for rent there.

Riva also offers housing in other various nominated buildings. Sometimes the excellent houses have already been rented out, sometimes the flats are still available. We manage flats in the Atlantic House, as well as in the Karel Doorman, De Rotterdam, Red Apple, New Orleans and 100Hoog.

So there is plenty of choice for expats who want to live in a landmark building in this architectural haven called Rotterdam. Enthusiasts can find out what is on offer during The Rotterdam Architecture Month via this site.
