Of all countries and cities where the native language is not English, the people of Rotterdam are the best in the world according to EF. Followed closely by residents of Amsterdam and The Hague. This is the ninth time that the EF English Proficiency Index (EF EPI) has published its results, and this year the Index is based on the data of 2,300,000 test takers around the world who took the EF Standard English Test (EF SET) or one of the English placement tests in 2018. The study included 100 countries and territories, the biggest study to date.
The Netherlands scored 70.27 followed by Sweden and Norway. A couple of things make the Dutch stand out in English proficiency. Prosperity and the small number of inhabitants seem the ideal combination for good English language skills in the Netherlands. Another reason for the Netherlands’ high score could be the inclusion of the English language as a compulsory subject at Dutch primary and secondary schools, the abundance of English courses available and the focus on communication in these classes. Also, in the Netherlands, many English television programmes are watched without being dubbed!
As the Dutch scored 70.27 in general, People from Rotterdam scored even higher with 71.68! According to the researchers Rotterdam has an international presence with many high-rise buildings, 170 nationalities and a world port.
"Ships from all over the world that have been visiting the Maas for centuries, large international companies and international studies at Erasmus University ensure excellent English language skills," suggests EF.
Off course Riva offers an English site. As we mainly service expats it's only appropiate. On this site for expats we offer information about our method, rules and regulations, our city and off course our house listings. On our Facebook-page we mostly display the houses we rent out with English information.
