Guide for staying in Rotterdam as an expat: Central Station area
This guide will help out all of the expats living in Rotterdam. In our first blog we will discuss about what you can see and where you can eat in the district around Rotterdam Central Station.
Since this is your first day as expat in Rotterdam, you want to check out the business district. After exiting the tram at ‘Centraal Station’ you arrive at the heart of the business district. It is well known for its modern architecture. High buildings are looking down on you. You can also see the train station. Some people call it a ‘spaceship’, others a ‘shark head.’
This new and modern Central Station opened in 2014 and is a welcome addition to the modern business heart. 17.000 Travelers exit and enter Central station, which makes it the third busiest of The Netherlands.
If you like modern architecture you might want to take a photo of the Central Station with ‘Delftse Poort’ in the background. More of an old-fashioned architecture fan? Then the Groothandelsgebouw might be more interesting.
After posting your photo on Instagram it is time to get to work. Since you are an expat you have decided do some work or administration outdoors and you are looking for a workstation.
Located on the first floor of the train station is the ‘Stationshuiskamer’. This workstation has lots of wall plugs and you have the possibility to see all the travelers run to catch their trains.
Do you like to study or work at a less noisy workstation? Than the ‘Douwe Egberts-cafe’, located in ‘Delftse Poort’ might be your best bet. Here you can even ask for a room to have a meeting behind closed doors. After some time you are checking your watch. It is already dinner time!
No worries, there is a ‘Vapiano’, an Italian diner, located in ‘City Plaza’. Vapiano has a self service concept, but all there food is made fresh. They also have a take-away option so you can enjoy your pizza or pasta on your couch at your new home.
We would also recommend to visit ‘Burgertrut’. This is a diner where you can eat veggie, vegan and organic hamburgers. Of course they serve them with fries. This place is well known by inhabitants and a must visit. Also, the earlier mentioned ‘Groothandelgebouw’ has some fine dining restaurants.
After finishing dinner you want to have a fitness session. You enjoyed dinner, but are feeling guilty. No worries, nearby are two fitness centres. You can choose between Fitland and Fit For Free. More of a dancer? There is also a Global Dance Center, which might be an option to have fun but also exercise.
Your first day as expat has come to an end. You want to go to your apartment, which you just received the keys of at Riva Rentals. Once arrived you’re taking a bath and are going straight to bed. Time to set your alam. You’re thinking by yourself: “Wow, this guide for expats really helped.” So, what will be your next visit?
