As usual Rotterdam is filled with art, movies and photography during the beginning of the year. Riva appreciates the art. So we will tell you all about the coming visual excitement coming up during World Press Photo Exhibition, International Film Festival Rotterdam and Art Rotterdam Week.

World Press Photo

It all starts with the World Press Photo Exhibition 2019 in the Laurenskerk from january 18 till february the 8th. The exhibition presents the winners of the renowned annual photo competition. A jury of leading photojournalism professionals have selected the award winning pictures. The photos are compiled in an exhibition that travels to 45 countries, and is viewed annually by more than four million people.

Riva offers a couple of apartments near the famous church in the city center. The center will be fully devoted to the 49th International Film Festival Rotterdam from wednesday january the 22nd till february 2nd. With nearly 330.000 visits and more than 2400 film professionals present, IFFR is one of the largest cultural events in the Netherlands and also one of the largest public film festivals in the world. The latest feature films, documentaries, short films, exhibitions, performances and talk shows make Rotterdam the exciting global capital of cinema for twelve days. Meeting place is festival heart de Doelen. There are live performances, debates and Q & A's with filmmakers and actors and every film evening ends with a spectacular party in the Rotterdamse Schouwburg.

IFFR looks into Rotterdam

Off course a special programme will be dedicated to Rotterdam. On Friday 24 January 2020, films from Rotterdam will be our focus. LantarenVenster will be entirely dedicated to brand new films (short and long), Rotterdam classics, events, talks, audiovisual experiments, video clips and installations: everything revolving around film talent from Rotterdam. The spotlight for this, the third edition of RTM, the IFFR Rotterdam selection, will be on icons such as filmmaker Bob Visser and the recently deceased poet Jules Deelder.

Rotterdam Art Week

Only a couple of days later, just enough time to catch some breath, it’s Art Rotterdam Week. It mainly consists of these three cultural manifestations: Art Rotterdam, Object Rotterdam and Rotterdam Photo. But during the Art Rotterdam Week, the whole city changes into a valhalla for art lovers. Rotterdam is then all about fairs and special exhibitions in iconic museums and galleries.

The organisation of ART Rotterdam has developed an inspiring programme for the 21st edition of the fair in the iconic Van Nellefabriek. New this year are The Performance Show, Mural Machinepainting Show and the new presentation of the section dedicated to video art under the name citizenM Projections.

The Performance Show will take place at AVL Mundo/Atelier Van Lieshout, a stone's throw away from Van Nellefabriek and is an initiative of Art Rotterdam in collaboration with Atelier Van Lieshout, Witte de With and is supported by Rotterdam Festivals and Stichting Droom en Daad.

Rotterdam Photo

Rotterdam Photo takes place on Katendrecht. Photography lovers will have the opportunity to visit numerous art and design events. Rotterdam Photo celebrates the wide spectrum of photography as it presents itself in our contemporary image culture. Together with the exhibitions at the Nederlands Fotomuseum and the fine art photography fair Haute Photographie, the 'Kop van Zuid' will transform into the one-stop hub for photography fans in the Netherlands. 

From a broad range of submissions, the jury selected over 30 photographers to exhibit their work during Rotterdam Photo 2020, based on this year's theme TRANSITIONS. The both national and international selection reveals the intriguing works of photographers like Daniel Marquez, Annemie Martin and Nicola Moscelli. These selected photographers will display their work alongside renowned photographers such as Luuk Smits, Otto Snoek and Perrine Phelomeen. 

OBJECT Rotterdam

OBJECT is the fair for contemporary design. It shows the latest limited editions and one-offs from well-known and upcoming designers working in different design disciplines and with various materials. OBJECT is thé place where the cutting edge between design, crafts, fashion, architecture and art becomes evident and it is a must-see for collectors, professionals and other design-minded people.

OBJECT takes place in the HAKA Building. From Friday, february 7 through sunday, february 9. The monumental HAKA building is located in the Vierhavens area, the creative hotspot of Rotterdam where a large one is located number of designers. Especially for the visitors of OBJECT some of them open their studio. You can visit the workplaces of Daan Roosegaarde, Rotganzen, Atelier van Lieshout, Wieki Somers and Studio Makkink & Bey. On Friday evening, the artistic free town of Weelde will host an after party. 

HAKA gebouw IFFR Guide

The HAKA building was designed in 1931 by the architecten H.F. Mertens and J. Koeman commissioned by the Cooperative Wholesale Association De Handelskamer.

Dudok Groep is the owner of the still airframe building and offers visitors a unique opportunity to take a look inside. In the coming year the HAKA will be restored and developed into a lively multi-company building with catering outlets. Also the

The highest floors of the building are opened specifically for OBJECT visitors. Here the known focuses Rotterdam restaurant Ayla into a pop-up bar. The characteristic glass spaces on the roof offer a phenomenal  view over the area and the surrounding design studios.
